 Occipital Neuralgia
Description
Headache-like pain & numbness, radiating from the upper neck forward to the eye
 
Cause
Impingement or irritation of the occipital nerve, usually due to a cervical spine problem
 
Treatment
Nerve blocks, or nerve avulsion in refractory cases
 
 
Example
Patient with chronic neck-pain and paracervical muscle spasms
May have had neck surgery
Physical therapy and triggerpoint therapy unsuccessful
 
Results
> 90% pain relief (may be temporary)
Decreased need for medication
Increased neck motion and activity level
