| Disk Replacement (Arthroplasty) | |
|
Replacement of a herniated or degenerated disc with an artificial disc is a very new development. This procedure is called "total disc arthroplasty". Three artificial discs, one for the lumbar spine (Charite ® DePuy) and two for the cervical spine Prestige® Medtronic and ProDisc-C® Synthes have been recently approved by the FDA. Other artificial discs are being developed. Their use has very strict patient selection criteria and many insurance companies still consider these implants "experimental". As with all new medical modalities the long term results, risks and benefits of these implants are not yet fully established. However, cervical disc replacement seems very promising and may eventually become the "gold standard" for surgical treatment of single level cervical disc disease.
We are now excited to offer the newly approved cervical replacement disc: made by Synthes For further information please call our office at (631) 265-2020
