Disk Replacement (Arthroplasty)

Replacement of a herniated or degenerated disk with an artificial disk is a very new development.

Two artificial disks, one for the lumbar spine (Charite ® DePuy) and one for the cervical spine (Prestige ® Medtronic) have been recently approved by the FDA. Other artificial disks are being developed.

Their use has very strict patient selection criteria and many insurance companies still consider these implants "experimental". As with all new medical modalities the long term results, risks and benefits of these implants are not yet established.
