Foraminotomy

Removal of a portion of the lamina and facet joint to open up the space where a spinal nerve is located.

Usually needed during a decompressive laminectomy for spinal stenosis to undo bony impingement of a spinal nerve root.

A "key hole" foraminotomy is performed to remove herniated disks in the cervical spine by way of a posterior approach.
