Laminotomy

Removal of a small section of the posterior portion of the ring (lamina) of the vertebra that forms the spinal canal.

It is used to relieve pressure on a nerve or to allow the surgeon access to a disk that is pressing on a nerve.

A laminotomy does not destabilize the spinal column and is often a part of a micro-diskectomy procedure.
