A microdiscectomy is a modification of a standard discectomy. This is a minimally invasive procedure which is done through a smaller incision and requires the use of a microscope. Access to the herniated disc is usually achieved through an "interlaminar" approach while maintaining the structural integrity of the ligaments as much as possible. In carefullly selected cases the success rate is about equal to standard discectomy and recovery is faster due to less surgical trauma to the muscles. A major disadvantage is its small opening which may lead to "missing" of dislodged disc fragments or other nerve pinching conditions (stenosis).
